Mary Beth Barone’s first hour is on Netflix. Galaxy Brain landed Tuesday, July 28. Two weeks later, the Stamford-raised comic has the special a lot of stand-ups still treat as the real marker: a streamer hour with her name on it.
She taped it Thursday, March 19, at NYU’s Skirball Center for the Performing Arts in New York. Ky Newman directed. The Guardian clocked it at 55 minutes. Netflix rates it TV-MA.

Exes, dating apps, and the first three minutes
The hour works the prompts in that blurb, then widens into politics, sex, reproductive rights, and how rare a woman-led Netflix special still is. Variety, which talked to her after the drop, says she also goes after the men in her field, and that she opens by razzing the streamer itself for the usual notes about winning people over fast.
She told Variety, “I’m just fully ready to get it out there and see who’s mad at me.”
To The Guardian she put the career math in plainer terms: “With the special, it feels like you’ve achieved something pretty rare and they’re betting on you.”
Sean L. McCarthy at Decider, who watched it, flags crowd work on a friendship that blew up, grief for her father, and a stretch about the comedy industry that starts with Netflix telling her she had three minutes to win people over.
She already had a YouTube special
Her previous set, the 40-minute self-produced Thought Provoking, went up on YouTube in 2024. Galaxy Brain is the first hour, and her first for Netflix.
Deadline, which broke the July 28 date, lists exec producers Alex Bach and Daniel Powell of Irony Point, with Taylor Kowalski producing. Barone also writes and stars as Grace on Benito Skinner’s Prime Video series Overcompensating, and co-hosts the podcast Ride with him.
