Brian Redban sat down with Are You Garbage for the first time. Kevin Ryan and H. Foley recorded it at Tuddy’s. The episode landed on their YouTube and the podcast apps around August 10. Runtime is about an hour and five minutes.
The guest they kept missing
They had him on the books in Austin more than once. This one happened in New York, while Kill Tony was doing nights at Madison Square Garden. Foley introduced him as the most successful comedy podcast producer ever. The résumé on the table was The Joe Rogan Experience, Kill Tony with Tony Hinchcliffe, and the Deathsquad network.
Ryan and Foley already saw the first Garden Kill Tony. Redban said the jump still feels crazy: a small room at the Comedy Store twelve or thirteen years ago, then two nights at the Garden. We wrote up the latest Garden run here, and the Intuit Dome tape that just hit YouTube here.
Columbus, then a fake newsletter
Redban grew up in the Columbus suburbs, Worthington and Dublin. His mom worked as an executive secretary for Dave Thomas at Wendy’s. He ate in the test kitchen, went to Wendy’s summer camp at the Columbus Zoo, and remembers Jack Hanna walking through the reptile building with a baby tiger. He started college at Columbus State, then Ohio State for multimedia, then quit because companies were already hiring him to build websites.
The career story starts with a lie. He wrote a fake Nine Inch Nails newsletter, mailed it to the publisher address on a CD, and got backstage with Trent Reznor. That turned into websites and compressed videos for Doug Stanhope. Joe Rogan saw the work and asked him to move to California. JRE started as livestreams. People wanted it at work, so Redban pulled the audio and posted it as a podcast.
The verdict
The garbage test goes the way you think. He walked in with a McDonald’s iced coffee. Shirt before deodorant. Old Spice. An electric Hummer that crab-walks. A Tesla solar roof. DoorDash twice a day. Foley calls him garbage of the future. They still love him.
What he plugged: Sunset Strip Comedy Club in Austin, which he co-owns, and a fake band he called Cap Red Seven, the CATBREAD7 project. Joey Diaz is moving into Redban’s downtown Austin place one week a month.
